 1843 December: Elected to Elham Charity School. The Bootshoe Boys
 1849 July - apprenticed to Richard Finch, Upper Hadres, carpenter, for seven years for £25. The Bootshoe Boys
 1851 Richard Finch had broken his engagement as apprentice master so now apprenticed to William Bean Mar, carpenter of Swingfield, for a further five years at £16 The Bootshoe Boys
 1853 27th April - Mr. Bean was requested to attend the school regarding the character of William. The report was not satisfactory and he was put on probation for six months with his apprenticeship fee withheld. It transpired that William appeared to reform and finished his apprenticeship.
