Born in Canterbury the family then moved to Lambeth where his father William worked as a plumber. George's mother Elizabeth nee Burrows died of chronic bronchitus & eventually his father married again. George did not get on with his step mother & around 1866 he & his elder brother William moved to Elham where his uncle Thomas Robson Pitcher had a painting & decorating business. He worked as a painter but when he married Caroline Fox & they started to have children he needed a better source of income hence he took on the tenancy of the Kings Arms which he ran until the mid 1920s. He & the family are featured on page 25 of the photos of Elham sitting on the grass to the right of the photo. George Dixon Pitcher retired to a house called the Willows in Cock Lane and died Sept 3 1929.
