23 November 1891 he joined the 21st Hussars (and gave his age as 18 years 11 months instead of 17 11), enlisting at Canterbury. He served in the East Indies and Egypt, followed by ‘home’ service in Ireland. He was awarded the Sudan Medal with Khartoum clasp. (His attestation is on Find My Past). He gave his next of kin as his mother Elizabeth (Upper Cottage, Elham) followed by brother Charles & sister Emily.

When he left the army in 1903 he did not come back to Elham but went to London, living in islington. He worked on the tube, becoming a motorman, until his death on 8 May 1922.
