Biography
The death of John Midgley at the age of ninety-one, following a fall, came as an awful shock. Only the day before I had chatted to him as he unloaded the car after one of his trips to Waitrose, and he spoke optimistically and with his usual humour about the prognosis for his lung cancer. His life had been lived to the full to the very last. John’s working career was all in his native Yorkshire. However, like most of his generation, almost five years of his youth were spent on active service. Such were John’s leadership qualities that he had attained the rank of Major, aged only twenty-two, before leaving the Royal Artillery to return home to run the family haulage business. He managed to combine this with a happy family life and active involvement in local government and the voluntary sector. He was particularly proud to have been the first Mayor of Wetherby, a post he held for six years. Derek Boughton, EHS Chairman
